3500 Series Machine Engines:
3500B SeriesIt is important to apply 5P-3931 Anti-Seize Compound to the threads of the bolts and/or studs that are used to fasten the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold. The anti-seize compound acts as a lubricant on the threads. When a fastener is tightened, some of the turning force (torque) is required to overcome the friction between the threads. The remainder of the torque results in the clamping force on the joint. When the anti-seize compound is applied to the threads, less torque is required to overcome the friction between the threads. Therefore, a greater percentage of the specified torque will go toward producing a clamping force on the joint. If no anti-seize compound is applied, the specified torque will result in less than the desired clamping force on the joint between the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold. Insufficient clamping force will eventually result in an exhaust leak at the joint between the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold.
