When you operate a machine in a situation that has a risk of detracking, you must increase the tension of the track. These situations can include the following:
Travel up slopes or along slopes
Travel in underfoot conditions with embedded stumps or rocky conditionsIn these situations, the track tension can be increased from 35 5 mm (1.38 0.20 inch) to 20 mm (0.80 inch) of track sag. In order to set the track tension, refer to the OMM for your machine. For the most accurate measurement of track sag, run the machine in reverse before raising off the ground. This will move the slack to the bottom of the track. This change will provide improved engagement of the track in these applications. Do not increase the track tension over the specification that is required to reduce track sag. The specification that is required to reduce track sag is 20 mm (0.80 inch) underneath the center roller. If you tighten the track beyond this point you can cause a severe increase in wear to the track and damage to the undercarriage frame and components. If the machine continues to detrack on flat ground, check that the support plate for the drive motor has not been bent outward. If this occurs, the track may derail more frequently. It may be necessary to check the support for the drive motor. It may be necessary to rework the support plate for the drive motor. If the machine becomes detracked it is necessary to reset the tension of the track.Use caution when you turn the machine on slopes or transitions. Remember to back down slopes and use three-point turns. In order to avoid detracking, refer to OMM for correct machine operation.Note: This new track tension is only necessary in situations that have a great chance for detracking. The standard specification for track sag should be maintained during operation in normal work environments. Increasing track tension will increase wear on tracks, sprockets, and idlers.
