(10) Torque converter Torque converter (10) is driven by the engine flywheel through a coupling. The engine flywheel turns housing (2) and impeller (5). The torque converter consists of impeller (5), turbine (3), lockup clutch (9), and stator (4) with one-way clutch (6). The lockup clutch allows the transmission to operate in direct drive in order to keep the power loss from the torque converter at a minimum.The torque converter case is fastened to the engine flywheel. Output shaft (7) connects the torque converter to the transmission planetary group. Impeller (5) directs oil onto the blades of turbine (3) causing the turbine to turn. The turbine directs the oil onto stator (4).

(16) Roller Stator (4) is connected to cam (12) by a spline. When the hydraulic oil tries to move the stator in the opposite direction to the turbine, rollers (16) are forced into the narrow end of slot (14). This action prevents the cam and stator assembly from rotating around the carrier. Since the cam is held stationary, the stator cannot turn and the one-way clutch is locked up.Stator (4) now directs most of the oil back to impeller (5). The remainder of the oil goes out of torque converter (10). The oil that goes back to impeller (5) from stator (4), moves in the same direction as the rotation of the impeller. Since this oil is moving in the same direction as the impeller, the torque output from torque converter (10) is multiplied.The output torque requirement can be less than or equal to the input torque. This condition can occur when speed is high and the resistance is low. Then, the turbine will be turning quickly. The oil that flows through turbine (3) strikes the back of stator (4) blades so that stator (4) starts turning in the same direction as the turbine. Cam (12) then rotates so that rollers (16) occupy the wide end of slot (14). Stator (4) is then free to rotate around the carrier. The oil then flows out of the converter.Turbine (3) turns hub (8). The hub turns output shaft (7). Power is sent through the output shaft to the transmission planetary group.Lockup clutch (9) is part of torque converter (10). The lockup clutch is located between housing (2) and hub (8). The lockup clutch is engaged under the following conditions: sufficient input speed to the transmission, sufficient transmission oil pressure and sufficient engine rpm. When the lockup clutch is engaged, the impeller and the turbine turn at the same speed as the engine and there is negligible loss of power in torque converter (10).
