At operating temperature, the hydraulic tank is hot and under pressure.Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Obtain the sample of the hydraulic oil as close as possible to the recommended sampling interval. In order to receive the full effect of S O S oil analysis, you must establish a consistent trend of data. In order to establish a pertinent history of data, perform consistent oil samplings that are evenly spaced.Before you start this procedure, shut off the truck engine and the deck engine. Allow the hydraulic system to cool until the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the filler cap slowly in order to relieve any pressure that is on the system.

Remove filler cap (1) from the hydraulic tank. The hydraulic tank is located on the right rear of the truck chassis.
Measure a length and cut a length of 1U-8757 Tube so that the tube will reach halfway into the oil that is in the hydraulic tank.
Insert the tube through the head of the 1U-5718 Vacuum Pump and tighten the retaining nut. The tube should extend 25 mm (1.0 inch) beyond the base of the vacuum pump.
Install a new 169-7372 Fluid Sampling Bottle onto the vacuum pump. Insert the tube into the hydraulic oil. Do not allow the tube to touch the bottom of the hydraulic tank.
Pump the handle of the vacuum pump in order to create a vacuum. Hold the vacuum pump upright. If the vacuum pump is not held upright, oil may contaminate the pump. If oil enters the vacuum pump, disassemble the pump and clean the pump before taking the sample.
Fill the fluid sampling bottle until the fluid sampling bottle is 3/4 of being full. Do not fill the fluid sampling bottle to the top.
Withdraw the tubing from the hydraulic tank.
Remove the fluid sampling bottle from the vacuum pump and secure the cap on the fluid sampling bottle.
