You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.
Under severe or dusty conditions, or where average operating speeds are less than 40 km/h (25 mph), such as inner city garbage compactors, delivery trucks or drill rigs, the maintenance interval should be reduced to 4000 Service Hours or 80 000 km (48,000 Miles), whichever occurs first.
Perform all previous maintenance as outlined in the Maintenance Intervals along with the maintenance requirements of this interval.Air Compressor
Inspect - Check
Caterpillar recommends a scheduled inspection/check for your air compressor.An inspection/check of your air compressor will minimize unscheduled downtime and reduce the chance for potential damage to other engine parts. The prevention of unscheduled downtime and costly repairs saves money that could be used more profitably elsewhere.If you operate the engine without the scheduled inspection/check, you could cause additional damage to your engine. For example: A damaged air compressor could contaminate the engine oil with particles of materials since engine oil also lubricates the air compressor. The circulation of these contaminates through the engine lubricating system could damage the engine's main and connecting rod bearings.If you choose to operate your engine without performing the scheduled inspection/check, your repair costs could be as much as ten times the repair before failure cost due to additional engine damage that could have been prevented.Our recommended service intervals for performing preventive maintenance on your air compressor are based on experience and accumulated data relative to the expectant life of the engine and its components.
