This article tells how a dry exhaust elbow and improved seals are used instead of a water cooled exhaust elbow. In some applications, such as emergency fire pump engines, a water cooled exhaust elbow is still needed.Two water cooled exhaust elbow groups (attachments) are available for use on 3508 and 3512 Industrial and Generator Set Engines and on 3516 Slow Speed Industrial and Generator Set Engines.
The new 7W288 Water Cooled Exhaust Elbow Group is available for use on 3508 Industrial and Generator Set Engines. This group is adaptable to first production engines. The 7W289 Water Cooled Exhaust Elbow Group is available for use on 3512 Industrial and Generator Set Engines and 3516 Slow Speed Industrial and Generator Set Engines. This group is adaptable to first production engines.
Use the procedure that follows to install seal (20).
1. Make sure bolts (10) and the bolts that hold the elbow assembly support bracket in position are loose.2. Move adapters (19) towards the exhaust elbow until they make contact with the elbow.3. Install seal (20) and collar (21). Make sure the tightening mechanism on clamp (22) is not next to the joint on collar (21).4. Alternately tighten the clamps to a torque of 6.0 0.5 N m (53 4 lb in).5. Tighten the bolts that hold the bracket and exhaust elbow in position.
