PROBLEM
8D-1508 Spider Assemblies with package date codes between D01M01Y08 (01 Jan 2008) through D11M05Y09 (11 May 2009) may have incorrectly labeled boxes and may actually contain 2D-2978 Spider Assemblies. 8D-1508 Spider Assembly boxes with date codes after D12M05Y09 (12 May 2009) are correctly labeled.
ACTION REQUIRED
Inspect 8D-1508 Spider Assemlbies in dealer parts stock for correct labeling and contents.
Refer to attached Rework Procedure.
SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
Submit one claim for all parts removed from dealer parts stock.
PARTS DISPOSITION
Outside NACD:
Handle the parts in accordance with your Warranty Bulletin on warranty parts handling.
Within NACD:
A send it back parts return request will be generated by Send-it-Back when filing the warranty claim.
Rework Procedure
1. Inspect the packaging date code on the outside of the 8D-1508 Spider Assembly. The first nine characters of the code indicate Day, Month, Year. Determine if the packaging date is between D01M01Y08 through D11M05Y09 (01 Jan 2008 through 11 May 2009). Refer to Image 1.1.1 for location and description on the 8D-1508 Spider boxes.
- If the 8D-1508 Spider Assembly packaging date IS between D01M01Y08 and D11M05Y09 (01 Jan 2008 through 11 May 2009), proceed to step 2.
- If the Spider packaging date IS NOT between D01M01Y08 and D11M05Y09 (01 Jan 2008 through 11 May 2009), mark the box to indicate that it has been inspected according to PI7#### / REBE5306 and return the part to the Dealer Parts Stock.

2. Inspect the spider assembly in the 8D-1508 box for visual details to confirm part identity. Image 1.2.1 shows typical 2D-2978 Spider Assembly characteristics.
The 8D-1508 Spider Assembly does not have a grease zerk hole. The 2D-2978 Spider Assembly does have a grease zerk hole and different caps than the 8D-1508 Spider Assembly.

There is also a difference in length from cap end to cap end, and a difference in the diameter of the caps (See Image 1.3.1 and Image 1.4.1).
- The 2D-2978 Spider Assembly measures 2.435" or 61.85mm in length and 0.969" or 24.61 mm in cap diameter.
- The 8D-1508 Spider Assembly measures 2.308" or 58.62mm in length and 0.937" or 23.80mm in cap diameter.

3. Order new 8D-1508 Spider Assemblies for stock replacement of the 8D-1508 boxes that were relabeled and restocked on dealer shelves as 2D-2978 Spider Assemblies.
4. If your dealership identifies a 2D-2978 Spider Assembly in a 8D-1508 Spider Assembly box and does not use the 2D-2978 Spider Assemblies as a stock item, remove the part from dealer parts stock and order a new 8D-1508 Spider Assembly for stock replacement.
