Adjustment of the fuel system outside Caterpillar specified limits will not improve fuel efficiency and could result in damage to the engine.

Clean all of the parts and inspect all of the parts. Replace any parts that are worn or damaged.
If the valve stem is removed during disassembly, apply Tooling (B) and assemble the stem portion of valve assembly (14) .
Lubricate seal (11) lightly. Install seal (11) on piston (12) and install piston (12) on valve assembly (14) .
Install washer (15) on the valve assembly and install retaining ring (13) on the valve assembly.
Place housing (10) on tool (A), and position tool (C) in the bore of the housing. Lubricate tool (C) with clean engine oil.
Push piston (12) in position with a smooth swift motion. Remove tool (C) from the housing. Install spring (17), retainer (18) and spring (20) in housing (10) .
Install O-ring seal (23) on extension (19). Install spring (22) and valve (16) on the extension.
Lubricate the bore of retainer (25) and lubricate O-ring seal (23) with clean engine oil. Install extension (19) in retainer (25). Install nut (2) on extension (19) .
Install diaphragm (21), washer (9) and spring (8) on retainer (25). Install retainer (25) in housing (10) .
Install stop (4) and nut (5) in cover (7). Hold retainer (25) in position and install cover (7) on housing (10). Install bolts (6) that hold the cover. Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 9 3 N m (7 2 lb ft).
Adjust the fuel ratio control.ReferenceRefer to the "Fuel Ratio Control Adjustment" in Testing and Adjusting, SENR1028 for the 3406C Engine.
Place tube (1) on the end of extension (19). Heat tube (1) to a temperature of 149 °C (300 °F) or heat the tube until the tube shrinks.
Replace gasket (24). Install the gasket and cover (26) with bolts (3) .End By: Install the fuel ratio control.
