start by:a) remove drive sprockets 1. Drain the oil from the final drive housing. Remove cover (1). Put wedges between the final drive gear and housing to keep the final drive gear in position.2. Remove cap (3) and loosen the bolts on the side not to be removed.3. Lift the frame and install blocks so the opposite half of the cap will clear the axle housing.4. Install tool (A) under the opposite tandem housing.5. Fasten a hoist to the axle housing. Remove nuts (2) that hold the axle housing to the final drive housing.6. Install two 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws to remove the axle housing from the final drive housing. Pull the axle housing off of the studs, axle out of the splines in the hub and lower the assembly to be clear of the frame. Remove the axle housing and axle. The weight is 350 lb. (158 kg). 7. Remove seal and shims (4). Keep the shims with the axle housing for correct installation.Install Axle Housings And Axles
1. Install the original amount of shims (1) and the O-ring seal on axle housing (2). If a new hub or support bearing is installed, make the adjustment of the support bearings as given in Step 2.2. Make the adjustment of the support bearing in the following way: a) Put the axle housing on the housing for the final drive.b) Install the nuts that fasten the housings together. Turn the gear to put the bearings in their seat.c) Check the end clearance of the final drive gear with tooling (A).d) Use a thickness gauge to find the amount of shims needed between the axle housing and the housing for the final drive.e) Use shims as needed to get .006 to .010 in. (0.152 to 0.254 mm) preload. Install a minimum of two shims on each side. 3. Install cap (3), bolts and locks. Tighten the bolts on the other side. 4. Install final drive cover (4). start by:a) remove axle housings and axles1. Remove O-ring seals and shims from axle housing. 2. Remove bolts (2) and pivot bearing cage (1). 3. Remove thrust washers (6). Remove bearings (5) from the pivot bearing cage. Remove bolts (4) and the locks from bearing adjuster (3). 4. Remove bearing adjuster (3) from plate (7) with tooling (A). Remove the shims between the end of the axle housing and bearing adjuster.5. Fasten a hoist and remove the axle from the axle housing. The weight is 110 lb. (49.5 kg).6. Remove the bearing cones from the axle with tooling (B). 7. Remove the bearing cups from the axle housing with tooling (C). Remove the axle oil seal from the housing.8. Remove the O-ring seals and gasket from the housing, cage and plate.Assemble Axle Housings And Axles
1. Install the oil seal in the housing with the lip of the seal toward the final drive.
