3406E (5EK) Truck EnginesEarlier information stated that any EUI found to have a missing screen was to be replaced. This is no longer the case. All the EUI's in these engines can now be used with or without the screens in the body of the injector. This change is possible because of a thorough study of high mileage warranty returns and a 5000 piece field follow study of EUI's without screens. These studies indicated no noticeable problems on EUI's with or without screens.
Location of screens and retainers in EUI's.When a EUI is found to have a loose or missing screen, a careful examination of the engine should be conducted to locate the missing parts (screen and retaining washer). The parts may be found in the fuel gallery or the parts could have fallen onto the piston as the EUI was being removed from the head.
A careful examination of the screens still in the EUI should be made. If the screens appear to be loose or coming out, they should be removed before returning the EUI to the cylinder head.
In order to keep track of the EUI's with missing or removed screens, complete a SIMS ticket. In the "Comment Section", identify which injectors have missing screens. For example, if the number 2, 3, and 5 injectors have missing screens, enter 2,3,5 MIS SCR (abbreviation for missing screens) in the "Comment Section".
