Depress the right brake pedal for normal braking of the machine. Release the pedal in order to release the service brakes.Note: Use only the right brake pedal for operation of the machine downhill.Left Brake Pedal
The left brake pedal is used primarily when the machine is used for digging.When the left service brake pedal is depressed beyond a certain point, neutralization of the transmission will occur. Neutralizing the transmission permits higher engine speed for better hydraulic response. Depress the left brake pedal when positioning and raising the bucket at the same time.Release the pedal to reengage the transmission and to release the brake.Note: Do not use the left brake pedal for operation of the machine downhill.Left Brake Pedal Operation
The functions of the left brake pedal depend on the position of the left brake pedal.

(1) Transmission reengagement set point
(2) Transmission neutralization set point
(3) Brake activation set point
(4) Maximum pedal travel (full application of service brakes) Initial pedal travel to position 2 will neutralize the transmission. Brake pressure will start being applied at position 3. Brake pressure will increase as the pedal is moved from position 3 to position 4. The machine will come to a complete stop at position 4.The transmission will reengage when the pedal is released past position 1.The transmission neutralizer function of the left brake pedal can be disabled by using the transmission neutralizer override switch.Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operator Controls: Upper Right Hand Switch Panel" for more information about the location and operation of the transmission neutralizer override switch.Note: Electronic Technician (ET) can be used to adjust the transmission neutralization set point (2) with respect to the brake activation set point (3).Reference: For more information on calibration of the left brake pedal, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, UENR0365, "986H Wheel Loader Machine Systems", "Calibrations (Cat ET)".
