Remove the steering cylinder. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Cylinder - Remove".
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Install caps and plugs on all openings in order to prevent dirt or debris from entering the system. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal components.

Note: Ensure that all hydraulic oil is drained from the steering cylinder before the steering cylinder is disassembled.
If a holding fixture is not available for the steering cylinder to be disassembled vertically, Tooling (A) must be used in order to disassemble the steering cylinder horizontally.
Use the straps in order to secure the steering cylinder onto Tooling (A), as shown.

Position the support on Tooling (A) under piston rod (1), as shown. Fasten the strap in order to secure piston rod (1) to the support.
Remove four bolts (2) and the washers from head (3). Use Tooling (A) in order to remove piston rod (1) and head (3) from cylinder assembly (4) .

Use Tooling (B) in order to remove locknut (6) (not shown) from the end of piston rod (1) .
Remove piston (5) from piston rod (1) .

Remove wear ring (7) from piston (5) .
Remove seal assembly (8) from piston (5) .

Install Tooling (C) through head (3) into cylinder assembly (4). Do not seat head (3) into cylinder assembly (4). Use Tooling (A) in order to remove piston rod (1) from head (3) .
Remove Tooling (C) from head (3) and from cylinder assembly (4) .

Remove the following items from head (3) : ring (13), O-ring seal (14), lip seal (9), U-cup seal (10), seal assembly (11) and wear ring (12) .
