Use a packing nut tool to loosen each of the packing nuts at least 360°.
Separate the plungers from the crosshead rods being careful to avoid damaging the mating faces of the plungers and the crosshead rods.

(5) Retaining nuts for the suction covers
Use a 434-9945 Hex Wrench and a 4.5 kg (10 lb) hammer to remove the retaining nuts from the fluid end.

Use a 434-9949 Slide Hammer to remove the suction covers. Remove the suction seals.
Inspect the suction seals for cuts and damage. Replace any damaged seals.

Slide each plunger away from each crosshead rod and out of the cylinder through the suction cover bore.

Turn each retaining valve 90° and remove the valve from the fluid end. Inspect each retaining valve for cracking and damage. Replace any cracked or damaged retaining valves.
Completely remove each packing nut from the packing gland thread bores.
Use an aluminum bar and a 1.13 kg (2.5 lb) hammer to perform the following procedure:Lightly tap on the packing seal assembly., Move the bar 180° and lightly tap the packing seal assembly. and Repeat this procedure until the packing seal assembly is removed from the suction cover bore.
Repeat procedure 11 until all of the packing seal assembly have been removed.
Inspect the hard surface area of each plunger for wear, scoring, and corrosion. Inspect each plunger for wear on the tapered plunger flange. Inspect each plunger for damage to the face which mates with the crosshead rod. Inspect the mating face and the tapered flange of each crosshead rod for wear and for damage prior to reinstalling the plungers.

Inspect each ring of packing brass for excessive wear and scoring. Discard the rubber seals. The rubber seals may not be reused.

When using pressure air, wear a protective face shield and protective clothing.The maximum air pressure for cleaning purposes must be reduced to 205 kPa (30 psi) when the air nozzle is deadheaded.
Remove the plunger lube fitting above each packing bore and blow air through the lube port to ensure that the lube passage is unobstructed.
Clean each packing bore with a dry cloth. Use a 220 grit emery cloth to lightly polish each packing bore.
Refer to the Parts Manual for the part numbers of the rubber seals or contact your Cat dealer. Lightly coat each brass ring with oil. Assemble and install the packing seal assembly. Take care to avoid damaging the
