Stop the engine, lower the bucket to the ground, and move the control levers back and forth to release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Slowly release the pressure by loosening the cap on the hydraulic tank, if it is cool enough to touch with the bare hand. Let the hydraulic oil become cool before any lines are disconnected in the hydraulic system.
1. Drain the oil from the hydraulic system. 2. Disconnect oil line (1). 3. Disconnect oil line (2) and remove bolt (4) that holds pin (3). 4. Fasten a hoist to the steering cylinder.5. Remove pin (3).6. Remove bolt (5) and pin (6).7. Use the hoist to remove the steering cylinder. The weight of the steering cylinder is 49.5 kg (110 lb).Install Steering Cylinders
1. Use a lifting device to put the cylinder in position.2. Install pin (6) and fasten with bolt (5). 3. Install pin (3) and fasten with bolt (4).4. Connect oil line (2). 5. Connect line (1).6. Fill the hydraulic system to the correct level.End By:a. separate anti-pivot linkDisassemble Steering Cylinders
Start By:a. remove steering cylinder 1. Remove seals (1) from each end of the steering cylinder.2. Remove bearings (2). 3. Put cylinder (3) in position on Cylinder Repair Stand (A). 4. Loosen setscrew (5) and use Wrench (B) to remove crown (4) from the cylinder. 5. Use tooling (A) to pull cylinder (3) from head (6) and the rod. 6. Remove bolt (10), piston (7), head (6) and crown (4). 7. Remove seal assembly (11) and wear ring (12) from the piston. 8. Remove seals (13) from the head. 9. Remove lip type seals (14) and (15) from the head.10. Remove seal ring (16) from the head.Assemble Steering Cylinders
*For further information, contact Caterpillar Service Technology Group. 1. Install seal (16). Install seal (15) with the lip pointing in. Install seal (14) with the lip pointing out. 2. Install O-ring seal (13). 3. Use Seal Expander (D) to install the seal on the piston. 4. Install wear ring (12) and seal assembly (11). 5. Put crown (4), head (6) and piston (7) on the rod. Put clean oil on the threads of bolt (10). Tighten bolt (10), with Torque Multiplier (D) to a torque of 1085 108 N m (800 80 lb ft). 6. Apply 5P960 Multipurpose Grease to the threads of cylinder (3) and crown (4). The rod must be fully extended when the crown is tightened.7. Install the crown on the cylinder. Use Wrench (F) to tighten the crown to a torque of 610 135 N m (450 100 lb ft). 8. Tighten setscrew (5) to a torque of 34 4 N m (25 3 lb ft). 9. Lower the temperature of the bearings and install them in the center of the bores with tooling (E). 10. Use Driver Group (A) to install the lip type seals. The lip of the seal must be toward the outside.End By:a. install steering cylinder
