Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the oil in the power train is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. Remove the breather filter cap when the engine is stopped and the breather cap is cool enough to touch by hand.Slowly loosen the breather filter cap in order to release any pressure in the oil tank. Be careful of hot hydraulic oil when any lines are disconnected from the components of the power train.
Drain the oil from the differential into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil - Change".

Remove two of bolts (1).

Install Tooling (A). Remove the remaining bolts (1).

Use Tooling (B) in order to remove cover (2). The weight of cover (2) is approximately 64 kg (141 lb).

Remove thrust washer (5) from cover (3).
Remove bolts (6) in order to remove plate (7) from cover (3).

Remove O-ring seal (4). Use a suitable lifting device in order to install Tooling (C). The weight of Tooling (C) is approximately 7 kg (15 lb).

Use Tooling (D) in order to release the parking brake. Do not exceed 4137 kPa (600 psi).

Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove sun gear (8). The weight of sun gear (8) is approximately 72 kg (159 lb).

Remove retaining ring (9).

Use a suitable lifting device in order to remove sun gear (10). The weight of sun gear (10) is approximately 27 kg (60 lb).

Use Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device in order to remove axle shaft (12). The weight of axle shaft is approximately 158 kg (348 lb).
