Check Oil Level
1. Check the oil level only with the engine stopped.
Do Not Overfill to reach above the top of the FULL mark on the dipstick.
Operating your engine when the oil level is above the FULL mark, could cause your crankshaft to dip into the oil. The crankshaft dipping into the oil could create air bubbles and could cause excessively high oil temperatures which can reduce the lubricating characteristics of the oil and lead to bearing damage. Also, a crankshaft that dips into the oil during engine operation, could result in a loss of power.2. Maintain the oil level between the FULL and ADD marks on the dipstick. If necessary, remove the fill cap and add oil through the fill tube.Cooling System
Check Coolant Level
Refer to the "Cooling System Specifications" section of this manual before adding coolant.
1. Check the coolant level with the engine stopped and cold.2. Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve any pressure.3. Maintain the coolant level within the recommended limit.4. Inspect the expansion tank cap. Replace it if damaged. Install the expansion tank cap.Walk-Around Inspection
Check Engine
For maximum service life of your engine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before starting the engine. Look for such items as oil or coolant leaks, loose bolts, worn vee belt(s), loose connections and trash build-up. Remove trash build-up and make repairs as needed.Keep a close watch for leaks. If leaking is observed, find the source and correct the leak. If leaking is suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended service intervals prescribed in this publication until a leak is found and fixed or until the suspicion for a leak has been proven to be false.Wipe all fittings, caps and plugs before servicing.1. Inspect the coolant hoses, and crankcase breather hose for cracking and loose clamps.2. Inspect all vee belt(s) for cracks, breaks or other damage. Check for proper belt tension.3. Inspect the water pump for leaks. The water pump seal is lubricated by coolant in the cooling system. It is normal for a small amount of leakage to occur as the engine cools down and parts contract.4. Inspect the engine for oil leaks, such as front and rear crankshaft seals, crankcase, oil filter and valve cover.5. Inspect the fuel system for leaks, loose fuel line clamps and fittings, and loose or worn hoses. If leaking is observed, find the source and correct the leak. If leaking is suspected, check the fluid levels more frequently than the recommended service intervals prescribed in this publication.Continue to check the fluid levels more frequently until a leak is found and fixed, or until the suspicion for a leak has been proven to be false.6. Inspect wiring for loose connections and worn or frayed wires.7. Inspect the air intake system hoses and elbows for cracks and loose clamps.8. Inspect engine-to-frame ground strap for good
