Installation Procedure
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Illustration 1 g00619974
Note: The installation procedure is identical for all three compression brake housings.
Install the stud for nut (3) if the stud was removed. Tighten the stud to a torque of 65 10 N m (48 7 lb ft).Note: Some of the early 340, 340A, and 340B compression brakes utilized two mounting studs that are located in the front of the brake housing.
Place compression brake housing (5) over the stud.
Install bolts (1) , bolts (2) , and the washers. Install nut (2) .
Use the following procedure in order to tighten the compression brake:Note: If your application has two mounting studs, use a crisscross pattern in order to torque the mounting stud nuts and the center bolts.
Tighten center bolts (2) to a torque of 54 N m (40 lb ft).
Tighten nut (3) to a torque of 54 N m (40 lb ft).
Tighten outer bolts (1) to a torque of 54 N m (40 lb ft).
Tighten center bolts (2) to a torque of 109 N m (80 lb ft).
Tighten nut (3) to a torque of 109 N m (80 lb ft).
Tighten outer bolts (1) to a torque of 109 N m (80 lb ft).
Connect wires (4) .
Set the lash for the slave piston. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Slave Piston Lash - Adjust".A change to the tightening procedure for 340 Series compression brakes has produced two different sets of mounting bolts. The set of current mounting bolts can be identified by containing 3 hex head bolts and one twelve-point bolt. Refer to Illustration 2.
Illustration 2 g03489200
The torque sequence and the bolt locations for installation of the Jake Brake compression brake.
Install hex head bolts (6) , (8) , and (9) into the positions that are shown in Illustration 2. Install the twelve-point bolt (7) across from the mounting stud for the compression brake. Install the mounting stud nut (10) onto the mounting stud. Finger tighten the mounting bolts and the mounting stud nut.Note: Ensure that the placement of the bolts coincide with the bolt locations that are shown in Illustration 2. Incorrect placement of the bolts will result in a loss of brake performance.Note: Some of the early 340, 340A, and 340B compression brakes utilized two mounting studs that are located in the front of the brake housing. If your application has two mounting studs, tighten the second mounting stud nut as the last nut in the torque sequence. Refer to Steps 2.b and 2.d.
Refer to the torque sequence that is shown in Illustration 2.
Tighten bolts (6) , (7) , (8) , and (9) to a preload torque of 50 7 N m (37 5 lb ft).
Tighten mounting stud nut (10) to a preload torque of 50 7 N m (37 5 lb ft).
Tighten bolts (6) , (7) , (8) , and (9) an additional 90 5°.
Tighten mounting stud nut (10) an additional 90 5°.End By: Install the valve mechanism covers.
