Caterpillar Wheel Tractor-ScrapersReports have been received which indicate that pull hooks on the above models are sometimes used to attach cables, chains or other devices to lift the machine. This is a dangerous practice! The pull hooks on these machines are designed for use only when a machine is to be pulled, and the hooks will withstand these horizontal loads satisfactorily. When a machine is lifted, a vertical load is applied to the hooks, which are not designed for this type of stress. Also, the hooks are not designed to retain the cable, chain or other devices when the load is in a vertical direction. As a result, the chain, cable or other device can possibly slip off the hook and permit the machine to fall. This could cause severe damage to the machine and/or possible injury to personnel. Remember, pull hooks must be used only to pull a machine, not to lift it. The use of correct procedures will assure maximum safety.
