Engine Starting Above 0°C (+32°F)
1. Push down parking brake knob (1) in.2. Move propel control lever (2) to the STOP position.3. Move vibration on/off switch (3) to the OFF position.4. Move the water spray switch (4) to the OFF position, indicator light off. 5. Pull throttle control (5) out, approximately one third of its travel, and lock in position.6. Turn engine start switch key (6) to START to crank the engine. Release the key when engine starts.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Key needs to be returned to off position before attempting to crank engine again.Turbocharger damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil pressure is sufficient.
Engine Starting Below 0°C (+32°F) (If Equipped with Fueled Starting Aid)
1. Follow steps 1 through 5 in Engine Starting Above 0°C (+32°F). Then proceed with the following steps. 2. Turn engine start switch key (1) to the ON position.3. Apply heat switch (2).4. Turn engine start switch key (1) to START to crank the engine while applying heat.5. Release engine start switch key (1) when the engine starts. Release heat when the engine runs smooth. It may be necessary to return the starting aid switch to the PREHEAT position for ten seconds after the engine has started. For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for Cold Weather Recommendations, SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer. Refer to starting decal on the side of the instrument pedestal.Engine Starting with Jump Start Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode resulting in personal injury.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump start cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jumper cables.Improper jump procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect the battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and the battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump only with a battery source with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump source is connected.
When starting from another machine, make sure the machines do not touch. This could prevent damage to engine bearings and electrical circuits.Turn on (close) the disconnect switch prior to the boost connection to prevent damage to electrical components on the stalled machine.Severely discharged maintenance free batteries will not fully recharge from the alternator alone after jump starting. The batteries must be charged to the proper voltage with a battery charger. Many batteries thought to be unusable, are still
