Diverter Valve
(1) Valve body. (2) Passage. (3) Passage. (4) Drain passage. (5) Plug. (6) Passage. (7) Spool. When spool (7) is moved to the left, plug (5) must be removed because return oil from the slack adjuster must be drained before the parking brakes can be released. With spool (7) in this position, the flow of oil to passage (3) is stopped. With spool (7) in the towing position, oil will go in passage (6), around spool (7) and out passage (2) to the parking and secondary brake valve.Shuttle Valve
Location Of Shuttle ValveThe shuttle valve is used in the service brake system. Passage (A) is connected to the service brake slack adjuster. Passage (B) is connected to the diverter valve. Passage (C) is connected to the rear service brake master cylinder.
Shuttle Valve
(1) Ball. (A) Passage to slack adjuster. (B) Passage from diverter valve. (C) Passage from service brake master cylinder. When the service brakes are applied, pressure oil from the service brake master cylinder will go in passage (C). Ball (1) will move to the left and stop the flow of oil to passage (B). The oil will go out passage (A) to the slack adjuster. See Figure 1.When the retarder control lever is moved to the ON position, pressure oil will go from the retarder master cylinder to the diverter valve. From the diverter valve the pressure oil will go in passage (B) and move ball (1) to the right. Ball (1) will stop the flow of oil out passage (C). The pressure oil will go out passage (A) to the slack adjuster. See Figure 2.Slack Adjuster For Rear Brakes
Location Of Slack AdjusterThe operation of the slack adjuster keeps the time, between when the pedal is pushed and brake application, the same with either new or worn brakes. The slack adjuster is in the oil system for the rear brakes and is full of oil. Its location, in the oil system, is between the master cylinder and the brakes in the wheel. When a pedal is pushed for brake application, oil from the master cylinder goes through inlet (3) into the slack adjuster. The oil pushes pistons (2) and (4) and the pistons push the oil in chambers (6) and (9) through outlets (1) and (5) to the brakes in each rear wheel for brake application. The oil that was in chambers (6) and (9), when pistons (2) and (4) were against the center of the slack adjuster with springs (7) and (8) in compression, was the amount of oil needed to make a complete brake application.
Slack Adjuster (With Brakes Released)
(1) Outlet to a brake. (2) Piston. (3) Inlet from master cylinder. (4) Piston. (5) Outlet to a brake. (6) Oil chamber. (7) Spring. (8) Spring. (9) Oil chamber.Release the brake pedal and there is no pressure in the oil from the master cylinder in the slack adjuster. Return springs in the brakes, that were put in compression by the oil from the slack adjuster for brake application and the oil
