Remove weld (B) from cutting edge (3) to side bars (1) of bucket.

Remove welds around adapters on corners of bucket. Refer to Illustration 11.Note: Adapters are a part of cutting edge assembly.Note: The adapters at the corners of the bucket are welded to cutting edge and side bars. After welds are removed, cutting edge should loosen from bucket.

Create a chamfer (beveled edge). Refer to Illustration 12.

Place the cutting edge in position on blocks or stands as pictured in Illustration 13.
Place the cutting edge into position in the bucket. Verify that cutting edge is level as shown in Illustration 3. Apply tack welds between the bottom of the side bars, the cutting edge and on top of the adapters. Preheat those areas to reduce the chance of cracks developing. Cutting edge to wrapper welds do not require preheating if the cutting edge is butter beaded.

(Y) Fillet welds (X) Bevel
Preheat temperature of the corner adapter top strap, the cutting edge behind the top strap and the lower portion of the side bars to 149 °C (300 °F) to 260 °C (500 °F) and weld the side bars to the adapters and the cutting edge with (X) size bevels welds in Illustration 14. Cover the sidebars with equal leg (Y) fillet welds, which should be at least 2 mm (0.08 inch) (X plus 2 mm) taller than the bevel welds. Alternate welds between each side of the sidebars.

(E) Point (G) Point
The fillet welds should run from (E) to (G) between the bottom of the sidebars and the top of the corner adapter straps. There should be no weld stop/starts near the front edge of the sidebars.

(H) Adapter welds
Blend in the adapter welds (H) with a disc grinder at the front edge of the sidebar in Illustration 16 to eliminate stress concentrating ridges, ripples, or undercutting and round the corners as shown in Illustration 15.

If the wrapper surface does not align with the cutting edge and the wrapper is lower than the top of the cutting edge, weld in a series dogs to the wrapper and drive wedges under the dogs to bring up the low points flush as shown in Illustration 17. Remove any braces near the area to be realigned.

(J) Point (K) PointNote: During multiple weld passes, the heat generated in the cutting edge may cause cutting edge to become uneven with the wrapper. Periodically check the cutting edge and if warping starts, stop welding. Rotate the bucket over, and apply weld to the other side.
Disc grind the last pass weld, blending the weld smoothly into the cutting edge surface.
Roll the bucket over and air arc the bottom side of the wrapper at (K) to gain access to the bottom side of stringer weld (J) as shown in Illustration 18. Fill in the gouged area with multiple weld passes starting
