This article is written using a new "Machine Predelivery Inspection Report" form that is available in the U.S. In some areas of the world, different forms are used. However, the data entry format is the same on all forms. Therefore, most instructions in this article apply to all forms.A dealer predelivery serviceman is the final inspector before a machine is delivered to a customer. Caterpillar uses his reports to measure Caterpillar's quality effort and to further improve the quality of future machines. Therefore, we ask that a predelivery report be completed for every new machine and that all defects, no matter how small, be included.
A new "Machine Predelivery Inspection Report," Form 01-084158-03, (for ordering through terminal, enter Form No. 00084158) is now available from Caterpillar. The new report form simplifies the reporting of defects found during the predelivery inspection. There are entry lines to report up to fifteen defects for each report form. Of course, more than one report can be used, if necessary.
The following instructions are for completing this new form. It is recommended that a service manager or a training instructor review this article with the personnel involved in predelivery inspections. The illustration shows an example of a completed form, which can be used as a reference. Upon completion of reports, dealers should send them to Caterpillar in the same manner as regular SIMS reporting.
Instructions For Completing Machine Predelivery Inspection Report
The information in the shaded area will be the only data that is sent to Caterpillar through the SIMS reporting system. The rest of the form serves as a guide to the serviceman in performing the predelivery inspection. The report should be completed on each machine even if no defects are found. This will indicate to Caterpillar that the predelivery inspection was performed.
1. Fill out the first line information completely. The preprinted number "4" under "TYPE" indicates to Caterpillar that all information in this report was recorded during the predelivery inspection. For an industrial engine, enter the engine serial number under "Machine Serial Number".2. Perform the predelivery inspection using the check list, items 1 through 15, plus the operational check list. Enter a "check" mark as shown or "OK" as you complete inspection of each item.3. Report all defects, missing items, maladjustments, etc., in the lower shaded area using one line per problem. Every defect should be entered using the appropriate part number/group number as done in the regular SIMS report. Checking the parts books for every loose bolt is time consuming, but we need this information. Please take time and fill out the report conscientiously. Substitute group numbers can be used instead of actual group numbers, if necessary.The preprinted number "7588" indicates that the predelivery inspection was performed and should not be repeated for reporting defects below. Even if a separate work order is opened to correct a defect found during predelivery inspection, that defect still should be reported in the Machine Predelivery Inspection Report.
