All Track-Type TractorsOne method used by dealers during the troubleshooting of low power problems on the above machines is to put a load on the engine with the steering clutches and measure the fuel flow. The fuel flow is then used to find the engine horsepower.
To load the engine, the serviceman engages the steering brakes and, with the transmission in gear, gradually engages the steering clutches until the engine speed is decreased to the desired rpm. When this procedure is used, it is possible to damage the steering clutches because of the heat caused by friction. For this reason, Caterpillar's recommendation is to never put a load on an engine by slipping (gradually engaging) the steering clutches.
For track-type tractors, the recommendation is to load the engine with an implement. To do this, the serviceman lowers the blade or other implement as the machine moves. A different method is to engage the brakes gradually as the machine moves.
For track-type loaders, the recommendation is to let the torque converter take most of the load, but adjust the load with the hydraulics. Again, a different method is to engage the brakes gradually as the machine moves.
