3400 FAMILY OF ENGINES IN ALL APPLICATIONSProblem:
9Y-7735 and 9Y-9497 Connecting Rod Bearings are used in the 3400 Family of Engines. Some 9Y-7735 and 9Y-9497 Connecting Rod Bearings have been found to have overlay flaking. Solution:
Do NOT remove any 9Y-7735 and 9Y-9497 Connecting Rod Bearings from engines without evidence of flaking. Most reports of flaking are at the first or second oil change time period. If no evidence of flaking has occurred in this time frame, we believe the bearings will not lose their overlay. ONLY 9Y-7735 and 9Y-9497 Connecting Rod Bearings that were packaged between 01 June 1999 (Date Code 010699) and 31 October 1999 (Date Code 311099) and with Plating Codes GG, GH, and GI are suspect.The Date Code is located on the shipping box below the part name ("BRG-CONROD"). An example of a Date Code is "061199A9706XG". This Date Code refers to a bearing packaged on 061199 (06 November 1999). Note that this date is beyond the range of concern.If the package Date Code is between "010699" and "311099", check the bearing Plating Code. Open the box and while wearing clean gloves, inspect the bearing for the Plating Code. An example of the information found on the outside of the bearing follows: 9Y94975NKDD GCATGHThe letters on the last line (GH in the example) are the Plating Code. Only bearing with Plating Codes GG, GH, or GI are suspect. If the bearing Date Code and Plating Code is in the suspect range, remove the bearing from parts stock.NO suspect 9Y-7735 and 9Y-9497 Connecting Rod Bearings are in the Caterpillar parts system.
