System Operation Description:Perform this procedure under conditions that are identical to the conditions that exist when the problem occurs. Typically, problems with the injector solenoid occur when the engine is warmed up and/or when the engine is under vibration (heavy loads).The following background information is related to this procedure:These engines have electronic unit injectors that are mechanically actuated and electronically energized. The Engine Control Module (ECM) sends a 105 volt pulse to each injector solenoid. The pulse is sent at the proper time and at the correct duration for a given engine load and speed. The solenoid is mounted on top of the fuel injector body. The 105 volt pulse can be individually cut out to aid in troubleshooting misfire problems.

Diagnostic Tests that are available on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET)Cat ET includes the following tests that will aid in troubleshooting problems with the injector solenoids:Cylinder Cutout Test - The "Cylinder Cutout Test" is used on an engine in order to determine the individual cylinder performance while the engine is running. As one or more cylinders are cut out during the test, the "Cylinder Cutout Test" uses "Fuel Position" in order to evaluate the performance of the cylinders that are cut out. As the different cylinders are cut out, a comparison of the change in fuel injection delivery is used to identify cylinders that are weak or misfiring. When a weak cylinder (malfunctioning injector) is cut out, the increase in the fuel injection delivery will not be as large as the increase for a cylinder that has an acceptable level of performance. One reason for a cylinder that is weak or misfiring is an injector that is malfunctioning.Injector Solenoid Test - This test identifies an open circuit or a short circuit in the circuits for the injector solenoids. The test is performed while the engine is not running. The "Injector Solenoid Test" briefly activates each solenoid. A good solenoid will create an audible click when the solenoid is activated. Cat ET indicates the status of the solenoid as "OK", "Open", or "Short" after the test has been performed.If an open circuit is detected in one of the solenoid circuits, a diagnostic code is generated. The ECM continues to try to fire the injector. If a short circuit is detected, a diagnostic code is generated. The ECM will disable the solenoid circuit. The ECM will continuously check the disabled solenoid circuit until the problem is corrected.Injector codes must be programmed into some personality modules. Injector codes allow each individual injector to be fine tuned for optimum performance. The ECM will generate the following diagnostic code if the injector codes are not programmed:
253-2 Check Customer or System Parameters When an injector is replaced, you must program the ECM with the injector code that is etched on the injector. The injector code is a four digit number. If the ECM is replaced, all six injector codes must be programmed into the new ECM. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Injector Code - Calibrate".
