Rear of ScreedAn asphalt paver consist of two basic sections: the tractor and the screed. The tractor receives the asphalt, delivers the asphalt to the screed, and tows the screed. In some applications, the tractor also pushes the delivery truck. The screed spreads the asphalt on the surface that is to be paved.The tractor tows the screed with tow arms, which are attached to both sides of the tractor and the screed. The point at which the tow arms connect to the tractor is called the "tow point". Electrically controlled hydraulic cylinders raise and lower the tow point. The position of the tow point affects the angle of attack, which impacts the amount of material which passes under the screed.

The AS4173 Asphalt Screed is equipped with rear-mounted extenders (1) and (2) and tamper bars.This screed with the electric screed heating system is equipped with three control stations. One screed operator station is located on each screed extender and one heater control panel is located on the main screed. Walkways (3) are located along the main screed and the extenders. Use of the walkways to ride the screed when roading or transporting the machine is not recommended. Walkways allow the operator to move from one side of the screed to the other without walking on the newly laid mat.
