1. Clean all parts thoroughly and put a thin layer of clean SAE 90 oil on each of the inner parts of the differential and carrier.2. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup. Install bearing cup (1) in the carrier assembly.3. Heat the bearing cones to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Install bearing cones (2) and (3) on the pinion.4. Install pinion assembly (4) in the carrier assembly.5. Use a soft hammer to install ring (5) on the pinion assembly. 6. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup. Install bearing cup (6) in the cage.7. Make an adjustment to the preload of the pinion bearing as follows: a) Install the cage on the carrier assembly without the carbon seal and O-ring seal.b) Install three bolts (8) in the cage 120° apart.c) Install tooling (C) in the pinion as shown.d) Use a torque wrench and tooling (C) to turn the pinion. Tighten the three bolts (8) evenly until it takes a torque of 20 5 lb in (2.3 0.6 N m) to turn the drive pinion.e) Use a thickness gauge (7) to check the distance between the cage and the carrier at each of the three bolts.f) The average of these three measurements is the amount of shims needed between the cage and the carrier.g) Remove tooling (C) and the cage from the carrier.8. Install the carbon seal in the cage with tooling (B). Put a small amount of clean SAE 90 oil on the lip of the seal.9. Install O-ring seal (9) on the cage.10. Install the correct amount of shims (10) found in Step 7 and cage (11) on the carrier assembly. Tighten the bolts by hand to a torque of 75 10 lb ft (100 14 N m). Check the dowels in the housing for wear or damage. If necessary, make a replacement. Install dowels in the housing until the tops of the dowels are .140 .002 in (3.56 0.05 mm) above the surface of the housing.11. Put housing (13) on wood blocks as shown. Install thrust washer (14) and output gear (12) in the housing. Make sure the grooves in the thrust washer are in alignment with the dowels in the housing.12. Assemble the pinion assemblies as follows: a) Put tool (D) in a vise as shown.b) Install pinion retainer (18) on tool (D). Make sure groove (19) is in alignment with the dowel on tool (D).c) Install nut (16) of tool (D) to hold the pinion retainer in position.d) Install large bearing cone (17) and cone spacer (15) on the retainer as shown.e) Lower the temperature of the large and small bearing cups for pinion (20). Install the small bearing cup in the pinion. Use tool (E) and a press to make sure the cup is fully against the pinion.f) Install the large bearing cup in pinion (20). Use tool (E) and a press to make sure the cup is fully against the shoulder
