B 1U-6684 Piston Ring Compressor 1 Note: Connecting rods and bearings are marked with color codes. The color codes are blue, yellow, and unmarked. The bearings must match up with the corresponding connecting rods. It is possible to have different color codes in the same engine.
Ensure that the assemblies of the pistons and connecting rods are clean and free from damage.
Apply clean engine oil to the cylinder bore, to the piston rings, to the outer surface of the piston and to the connecting rod bearings.Note: Install the connecting rod bearings dry when clearance checks are performed. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bearing Clearance - Check". Apply clean engine oil to the connecting rod bearings during final assembly.
Rotate the crankshaft until the crankshaft pin is in the bottom center position. Lubricate the crankshaft pin with clean engine oil.
Illustration 1 g01352295
Typical Example
Illustration 2 g02868961
The correct position of the piston ring gaps
(A) Ring gap of the top compression ring
(B) Ring gap of the second compression ring
(C) Ring gap of the oil ring
Align the piston ring gaps to the positions that are shown in Illustration 2. Install Tooling (B) onto piston (3). Ensure that Tooling (B) is installed correctly and that the piston can easily slide from the tool.
Illustration 3 g02868862
Position the piston and the connecting rod assembly (3) at the top of the cylinder block. Carefully push the piston and the connecting rod assembly into the cylinder bore and onto the crankshaft pin.
Illustration 4 g02868736
Install connecting rod cap (2).Note: Ensure that number on the connecting rod cap matches number on the connecting rod. Ensure that the numbers are on the same side and point towards the fuel injection pump.
Apply clean engine oil onto bolts (1). Install bolts (1). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 81 2 N m (60 2 lb ft).
Ensure that the installed connecting rod assembly has tactile side play. Rotate the crankshaft to ensure that there is no binding.
Repeat Steps 2 through 8 to install the remaining pistons and connecting rods.End By:
Install the oil pan.
Install the cylinder head.
Note: If the piston, piston pin bushing, connecting rod, or connecting rod bearing has been replaced, then a different head gasket maybe required. Refer to Specification, "Cylinder Head" and the section on Selecting the Correct Cylinder Head Gasket.
