Removal and Replacement for the Base Edge and Side Bar
With the base edge or side bar at room temperature 29.5° 8.5°C (85.1° 15.3°F), burn through the welds with a cutting torch. While you are cutting this weld generate 30° bevels on the top edge and the bottom edge of the floor of the bowl. Grind the cut surfaces with a disc grinder in order to remove any carbon that may have built up during the cutting procedure. With the components at room temperature 29.5° 8.5°C (85.1° 15.3°F), burn through the welds between the side bar and the corner adapter. Burn the beveled angles into the bottom edge of the side bars that will be required when reattaching the side bars to the new corner adapters. Grind the cut surfaces with a disc grinder in order to remove any carbon that may have built up during the cutting procedure. Preheat the bottom edge of the side bar to 222° 18°C (432° 32°F) and apply a layer of weld to the newly formed beveled surfaces. No preheat is required when you are rewelding the side bars to the corner adapters. Both the front edge and the first two inches of the side welds should be ground smooth. The corners should be rounded. The large replacement base edges are initially coated from the factory with a layer of weld. No preheating of the edge or corner adapters is required when you are installing the new edge. Weld the base edge back into the bowl by using the E70T-5 electrode. Ensure that the joint is flat and horizontal before welding. Start welding at the top center of the base edge and work toward the sides of the bowl. Fill in half the required weld. Turn over the bucket and weld the entire underside. Then, turn over the bucket and complete the top bevel weld.On the 5130 Excavator buckets and the 5230 Excavator buckets, the side plates which attach to the rear of the base edge can be cut and repaired in a similar fashion as the side bars.Replacement of Adapter and Lug
When the base edge is at room temperature 29.5° 8.5°C (85.1° 15.3°F), gouge the weld from the area around the component. Remove the component. Grind the area with a disc grinder in order to remove any carbon that may have built up during the removal of the weld. When you are attaching the new adapter or the new lug to the base edge, preheat the adapter or the lug to 222° 18°C (432° 32°F). Preheat the base edge to 177°C (350°F). Weld the adapter to the base edge by using an E70T-5 electrode. If difficulty is experienced in obtaining a properly formed weld to the adapter or the base edge, use an E71T-1 electrode.Since the location of the weld joint on the top lug is flat and horizontal, you can use the AWS E70T-5 flux cored electrode. If the bucket is upside-down,
