Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Illustration 1 g00561407
Place thrust washer (5) into position on the dowels in the front housing. The thickness of a new thrust washer is 0.945 0.050 mm (0.0372 0.0020 inch).
Illustration 2 g00561405
If bearing (4) was removed, use Tooling (A) and a suitable press to install a new bearing in idler gear (1) .
Illustration 3 g00643395
Install the bearing until Dimension (X) is 2.50 0.50 mm (0.098 0.020 inch). After the bearing is installed, measure the inside diameter of the bearing. The correct inside diameter of the bearing after installation is 69.950 0.010 mm (2.7539 0.0004 inch).Note: The idler gears on each side are different. The gears must be installed on the correct side in order to properly engage the crankshaft gear. The left side idler gear has 67 teeth and the right side idler gear has 68 teeth.
Coat the bearing in idler gear (1) with clean engine oil.
Place idler gear (1) in position with the large shoulder of the idler gear in front. Support the idler gear until shaft (2) is installed.
The idler shafts used in the front gear group must be positioned in order to allow proper lubrication of the idler gear bearing. The idler gear contains a central pressurized oil feed hole. A cross drilled hole in the idler shaft supplies pressurized oil to the idler gear bearing.
Note: If your engine is a SAE standard rotation engine, refer to Illustration 4 for installation of the shafts.

Orient Oil Hole (A) of right shaft (2) at the 2 O'clock position.
Orient Oil Hole (B) of left shaft (2) at the 5 O'clock position.Note: If your engine is a SAE opposite rotation engine, refer to Illustration 5 for installation of the shafts.
Illustration 5 g01211367
(C) Oil hole (D) Oil hole
Orient Oil Hole (C) for right shaft (2) at the 8 O'clock position.
Orient Oil Hole (D) for left shaft (2) at the 11 O'clock position.
Illustration 6 g00561404
Lubricate new O-ring seals (3) with clean engine oil. Install the O-ring seals on shaft (2) .
Illustration 7 g00561379
Install the bolts that attach shaft (2) to the front housing.
Use Tooling (C) in order to check the backlash between the crankshaft gear and idler gear (1). The correct backlash is 0.051 to 0.533 mm (0.0020 to 0.0209 inch).
Use Tooling (C) in order to check the end play of idler gear (1). The correct end play is 0.25 to 0.85 mm (0.010 to 0.033 inch).End By:
Install the vibration damper. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Vibration Damper - Install".
Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install".
Install the auxiliary water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Auxiliary Water Pump - Install".
Install the water pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly,
