3. Apply the service brake. LATER MACHINES 4. Push the button to release parking/emergency brake.Be sure the button stays in to ensure brakes are released. EARLIER MACHINES 4. Move the parking/emergency brake lever to the EMERGENCY position. Wait at least 3 seconds. Then move the lever to RELEASE... If the brake system did not exhaust the air, move the lever to EMERGENCY. Depress and hold the air governor override button to increase air pressure to 150 psi (1030 kPa). Then move the lever to RELEASE. 5. Raise the scraper bowl just high enough to clear obstacles. 6. Turn the neutral lock OFF. Move the range selector to the highest desired speed, in one quick motion. 7. Release the brake pedal and push the accelerator down.8. The engine can be started in other than NEUTRAL, but the machine will not move. Should this occur, move the transmission range selector to NEUTRAL then to the desired speed.
Never coast on a down grade. Keep the transmission engaged.
9. Move the machine to an open area. Operate all the hydraulic controls, the brakes, and the steering to check for proper function. Stop and move the transmission control to reverse to check the operation of the back-up alarm.10. The transmission will shift automatically until the highest speed selected is reached.11. Use the retarder on down grades, when entering turns, fill areas or the cut.12. Apply service brakes to stop the machine.Emergency Stops
Stop the machine immediately if the low air pressure indicator goes on, or the electric warning horn sounds. There may be a malfunction of the air and brake system.
LATER MACHINES Pull the button out to apply the emergency brakes, if service brakes fail.The parking/emergency brake will apply automatically if air pressure drops below 40 psi (280 kPa). EARLIER MACHINES Move the parking/emergency brake lever to EMERGENCY to stop the machine, if the service brakes fail.The emergency brake will be applied automatically if the air pressure drops below 30 psi (205 kPa).
Move the lever to PARK when the machine stops.
ALL MACHINES
After an emergency stop, be sure the air pressure is in the operating range before moving the machine.
Changing Speed and Direction
First, second, and reverse are torque converter drive. They are selected manually. The automatic range, 3rd through 8th, is direct drive.The transmission will shift automatically between 2nd and the highest speed selected in the automatic range.Select the highest usable speed for job conditions.Move the range selector in one smooth motion. Manual shifting during load, haul, and dump cycles is not recommended.However, if more wheel torque is required, shift manually to 1st speed.
Engine overspeed can result if the transmission is shifted into 1st at over 5 mph (8 kph).The transmissions on later machines are equipped with downshift inhibitor for gears 2nd through 7th. 1st speed is not protected by inhibitor. Machines with downshift inhibitor will not necessarily downshift when the lever is moved. This protects against engine overspeed.Do not downshift with the transmission hold applied. Speed could decrease suddenly, or the engine could overspeed,
