The priority valve is designed to provide supplemental flow to the transmission controls or the brake control circuit when a pressure reduction is noticed. When the pressure in passage (9) becomes sufficient to open the check valve (not illustrated), some oil will be diverted from the torque converter circuit to the circuit that was activated.

(1) Torque converter inlet relief valve (5) Relief valve adjustment (6) Priority valve adjustment (8) Priority valve (13) Solenoid valveOperation of the Priority Valve
The priority mode of operation is determined by solenoid valve (13) . The solenoid valve connects chamber (11) to either inlet (9) or drain (3) .Oil from section (B) of the power train oil pump enters inlet passage (9) in the priority valve. The oil then flows through passage (2) into the torque converter circuit. The increased oil pressure in passage (9) is transferred to chamber (10) through a hole in valve spool (8A) .When the oil pressure in chamber (10) becomes higher than the priority valve setting in the current mode of operation, valve spool (8A) moves to the right. Oil then flows to outlet passage (2) .When the oil pressure in chamber (10) becomes lower than the priority valve setting in the current mode of operation, valve spool (8A) moves to the left. Oil to outlet passage (2) is restricted. The priority valve has two modes of operation: normal mode and priority mode.Normal Mode
In normal mode, the priority valve is operating at low pressure and no oil is diverted through the check valve into the transmission controls or the brake control circuit. In normal mode, when solenoid (13) is ON, chamber (11) is connected to inlet (9) . Inlet pressure in chamber (11) acts on the spool area around slug (12) . The pressure pushes valve spool (8A) to the right, which slightly compresses spring (7) . The additional force offsets a portion of the spring force, which reduces the priority valve setting for this mode of operation.Priority Mode
