Schematic of the Solenoid for the Right Steering Clutch
This diagnostic code is recorded when the current of the solenoid circuit is above normal. Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code for the solenoid is on hold and that the fault present indicator shows "SERV CODE". This procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created problems. When the procedure is completed, clear the created problems. Test Step 1. CHECK THE SOLENOID.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Ensure that the diagnostic code is on hold.
Disconnect the machine harness from the priority valve solenoid.
At the machine harness connector for the solenoid, place a jumper from contact 1 to contact 2.
Observe the status of the fault present indicator. Expected Result:"SERV CODE" is displayed and "SERV CODE" is NOT displayed as the jumper is installed and the jumper is removed. Results:
YES - The circuit is correct. The solenoid has failed. repeat this test step in order to verify that the solenoid has failed.Repair: Replace the solenoid.STOP
NO - The diagnostic code remains. Proceed to test step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE SIGNAL CIRCUIT OF THE SOLENOID FOR SHORT TO GROUND.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position. The machine harness remains disconnected from the solenoid.
Disconnect the J1 and J2 machine harness connectors from the ECM.
At machine harness connector J1 or J2, measure the resistance from the J1-18 (solenoid signal) to all possible sources of ground. The possible sources of ground are connectors: J1-2, J1-5, J1-7, J1-15, J1-16, J2-3 and frame ground. Expected Result: Each resistance should be greater than 5000 ohms. Results:
OK - The machine harness is correct. Proceed to test step 3.
NOT OK - There is a short in the machine harness. The harness has failed.Repair: The short is between wire F789-YL(Yellow) and the circuit with the low resistance measurement. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 3. DETERMINE IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS STILL ACTIVE.
Inspect the contacts and clean the contacts of the harness connectors.
Reconnect all harness connectors.
Turn the key start switch to the ON position.
Enter service mode of the Caterpillar Monitoring System and clear all inactive diagnostic codes.
Operate the machine.
Stop the machine and place the parking brake switch in the OFF position.
Determine if the diagnostic code is present. Expected Result:The diagnostic code is present. "SERV CODE" is showing. Results:
YES - The problem has not been corrected. The ECM has failed.Repair: Exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the problem persists, the ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. See the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
NO - The diagnostic code is NOT present.Repair: The problem does not exist at this time. The initial problem was probably caused by a poor electrical connection or a short at one of the harness connectors that was disconnected and reconnected. Resume normal machine operation.STOP
