Introduction
The problem that is identified below has a known permanent solution. Use the solution that is identified below.Problem
Debris from torque converter failure may cause extensive damage to the transmission system and to the hydraulic system on certain Telehandler machines. These machines have a single hydraulic oil tank. The oil is shared between the transmission and the hydraulic systems. Solution
Debris from failure of the torque converter is not a problem if the failure is identified early and if the machine is then shut down for repairs. Clean debris from the oil by filtering the system. Early torque converter failure may be identified by checking the torque converter output speed and by performing a torque converter stall test at each service interval. The torque converter output speed can be checked by using the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). The transmission should be in neutral and the engine should be at high idle in order to check the torque converter output speed. Check the torque converter output speed. If the output speed is higher than the engine speed, the torque converter needs to be replaced. If the output speed is not higher than the engine speed, perform the torque converter stall test. Perform the torque converter stall test that is outlined in the Service Manual for the appropriate machine. A 200 rpm drop in stall speed indicates that the torque converter has started to fail. When a drop in stall speed of 200 rpm occurs, the engine and the transmission should be checked for proper operation. If the operation of the engine and the transmission are correct, the torque converter should be replaced. Replace the torque converter when a drop of more than 200 rpm has occurred in the torque converter stall test.
