This troubleshooting guide can be an aid for the serviceman to find the cause of existing problems. Several common problems are covered in the guide, but these problems are not arranged in any particular sequence.Identify your particular type of problem from the Problem Index, then go directly to that problem in the guide. However, when you begin the procedure for that problem, start at Step 1 and follow through the step by step procedure. The steps that follow in a particular problem provide a definite sequence to be followed for a logical, one by one elimination of many variables. These steps are arranged in order from the more probable easiest to check to the less probable more complex to check.Whenever the cause of the problem is found and corrected, stop the test (as shown by the word STOP). Do not continue through the complete procedure just because it is there.The Electronic Locomotive Control box provides some system diagnostics. It can detect some voltage sense, current sense, rack position sensor, engine speed sensor, personality module and control box faults. These faults are indicated by red lamps which are visible through a lens in the control box lid.If the engine is shut down by the Electronic Locomotive Control, the fault which caused the shutdown will be indicated by the lamps. (Some control box, personality module and engine speed sensor faults can cause a shutdown).If the engine is shut down by operator request or a protection device in the locomotive electrical system, any system faults existing at the time of the shutdown will be displayed. Except for control box faults which are displayed independently, multiple faults are displayed one at a time for two seconds each.If the engine is not shut down, only the most serious fault in existence is displayed by the control box. If more than one fault exists, the lower priority fault will not be displayed until the higher priority fault is corrected.In order to troubleshoot electrical system problems, it will be necessary to measure some voltages and currents at connectors which are connected. Two simple service tools should be constructed according to the descriptions at the end of this manual. The tools are interfaces between the harness and connectors which maintain continuity and provide terminals for meter connections. The interface harnesses should not be used in normal system operation. Always remove them when troubleshooting is finished.
