Neutral Start Function
The neutral start function restricts energizing the start relay if the transmission control is NOT in the NEUTRAL or PARK position. The neutral start function ensures that the engine will not be started under conditions that would allow the transmission output to rotate unexpectedly. When the requirements are enabled, the ECM activates the start relay which then cranks the starting motor. This function is enabled when the following conditions are satisfied:
The shift lever is in the NEUTRAL position.
The key start switch is in the START position.
The system voltage is below +36 VDC.
The engine speed is 0 rpm. When the starting motor is turned ON, the starting motor will be disengaged under the following conditions:
The shift lever is NOT in NEUTRAL.
The key start switch is not in the START position.
The system voltage is above +36 VDC.
The engine speed is above 300 rpm.Note: The neutral start function can be bypassed by running a wire from start relay (+) to the start relay (-). This will suppress any faults. The customer will then have the option of not running the starter relay circuit to the Transmission ECM. In this case, the neutral start function will not be performed.Top Gear Function
The top gear function is enabled at all times. The ECM prevents upshifting to any gear that is greater than top gear. The value for top gear is stored in the ECM. The value of the top gear is programmable with Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool. The value of the top gear is programmed at the factory to the maximum top gear for the particular model of transmission. Cat ET can be used to program the top gear function through a configuration screen. The range of numbers are listed below. CX48-P2300 Factory setting ... 8Range ... 3 to 8Shift Inhibit Function
When an upshift is requested, the ECM monitors the following functions:
Engine speed
Engine load factor
Torque converter output speed
Transmission output speedThe ECM determines if the load factor is less than the desired threshold in order to allow the shift. The threshold is specified in order to ensure the following conditions:
The desired gear is obtainable.
The lockup clutch can be engaged successfully.
The durability of the clutch is not affected. If the load factor is greater than the threshold, the ECM inhibits the upshift until the specified conditions are met.Quick to Neutral Function
The quick to neutral function is activated by a switch. The switch allows the operator to shift to NEUTRAL from any gear. When the switch is activated, the ECM downshifts the transmission to NEUTRAL as quickly as possible. When the switch is deactivated, the ECM will hold the transmission in NEUTRAL until the shifter selects NEUTRAL. The Transmission ECM shifts the transmission when commands are received from the shifter.Lockup Clutch Disable Function
The lockup clutch disable function allows the operator to operate the transmission at higher engine speeds in all gears without the lockup clutch engaged. When the switch for the disable function is activated, the ECM prevents the lockup clutch from engaging.Note: An EID
