(3) Oil drain to crankcase The fumes disposal system requires the replacement of the fumes disposal filter. The service interval of the fumes disposal filter will be affected by the following items:
Engine load
Concentration of soot
Condition of the engineThe fumes disposal filter is equipped with a service indicator. If the fumes disposal filter becomes plugged prior to the normal service interval, increased restriction of the filter will cause the vacuum to become positive. When the pressure continues to rise, the service indicator will show through the cap. The service indicator indicates the need for the fumes disposal filter to be changed. Reset the service indicator by using the following procedure:Resetting the Service Indicator

Remove the plastic cover.
Push down on the service indicator.
Replace the cover. Replacing the Fumes Disposal Filter
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: When possible, perform the maintenance while the engine is not operating. Removing the canister may be difficult while the engine is operating because the negative air pressure creates a vacuum.

Release the latches that hold the canister to filter base assembly.
Lower the canister in order to expose the element. There may be oil in the bottom of the canister. Avoid spilling the oil.
Remove the filter element by pulling down. Dispose of the used element properly.
Remove the O-ring assembly on the top end cap of the used element.
Replace the O-ring seal on the bottom of the filter base assembly.
Install the new O-ring on the top end cap of the element. Install the element into the correct place.
Replace the canister and align the canister with the boss on the filter base assembly.
Clamp the latches in the closed position.
