Start By:
Install the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Remove and Install".
Remove the rear tire and rim assemblies. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove".
Release the braking system oil pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "System Pressure - Release".
Remove the torque converter bottom guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bottom Guard (Torque Converter) - Remove and Install".
Remove the transmission bottom guard. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Bottom Guard (Transmission) - Remove and Install".
Remove the rear drive shaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drive Shaft (Rear) - Remove and Install". Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Thoroughly clean the exterior of the component before the removal procedure. This procedure will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.Note: Put identification marks on all hoses, on all hose assemblies, on all wires, and on all tube assemblies for installation purposes. Plug all hose assemblies and all tube assemblies. This procedure helps to prevent fluid loss, and helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Personal injury can result from removing hoses or fittings in a pressure system.Failure to relieve pressure can cause personal injury.Do not disconnect or remove hoses or fittings until all pressure in the system has been relieved.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Drain the rear axle housing and the final drive assemblies into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Capacities (Refill)" for the capacity of the rear axle housing and the final drive assemblies. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil (With Axle Oil Cooler) - Change" or Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Differential and Final Drive Oil (Without Axle Oil Cooler) - Change" for the correct draining procedure.

Disconnect hose assembly (1).

Disconnect hose assemblies (4) and (5).

Disconnect hose assemblies (6), (7) and (8).

Remove the cable ties and disconnect hose assembly (9).
Open the rear fenders. Secure the left side fender to the operator station.

Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to both sides of the rear axle assembly. The weight of the rear axle assembly is approximately 3400 kg (7500 lb).

Remove four nuts (10) and the bolts.

Remove six nuts (11) and the bolts.
Lower the rear axle assembly to the ground.
Install the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Remove and Install".
Remove the rear tire and rim assemblies. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove".
