Note: An automotive gear oil (AGO) with an extreme pressure package is not recommended.The use of mineral-based oils are acceptable if the oils meet the requirements listed below:
Viscosity grade: ISO VG 150, ISO VG 220, ISO VG 320
Synthetic Viscosity Index: 160 minimum
Mineral-based viscosity index : 100 minimum
Viscosity of 20 cSt minimum at 100° C (212° F)
Pour point −30° C (−22° F)Alternate Seasonal Conventional (Non-Synthetic) Gear Oils

The use of an optimal plunger lubricant is critical to achieve full performance and service life that is designed and built into the pump. Cat Fluid Ends are designed to perform with either an oil or grease-based lubrication system.The use of a modern machine tool Way Oil for improved lubrication of the plungers and packing is highly recommended by Caterpillar. In an area where a Way Oil is not available, a suitable Rock Drill oil may be substituted.The use of Cat HYDO Advanced oils, SAE 10, and SAE 20 are acceptable for this application.Note: Use of lubricants that do not meet recommendations is unacceptable and may result in shorter plunger life, packing life, and premature failure of these components.Proper lubrication is critical during the start-up of the pump. Lubricant for the plunger must flow freely to the lube inlet prior to the start-up of the pump and stroking of the plungers.Refer to Table 1 for the specifications that must be met by an acceptable Way Oil or Rock Bit plunger pump oil. The use of lubricants that fail to meet these specifications is not allowed. The use of used crankcase oil is unacceptable.
