Information:
5. Install a new O-ring seal (8) on the oil screen housing. 6. Install cover (9) on the oil screen housing with the four bolts that hold it.
Early Models
Current Models (Transmission Serial No.'s 3UA1270-UP)7. Install the magnetic oil screen (10) on the transfer gear housing with bolts (11) that hold it. 8. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (12) and (13).9. Install both bearing cups in the transfer gear housing. Use asbestos gloves to handle the bearing cups. 10. Heat bearing cones (14) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), then install them on gear (15) with asbestos gloves. Use a 0.038 mm (0.0015 in) thick shim stock or feeler gauge to confirm that bearing cones (14) are seated on the gear. 11. Install the idler gear and bearing assembly in the transfer gear housing. 12. Heat bearing cones (14) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F), then install them on gear (17) with asbestos gloves. Use a 0.038 mm (0.0015 in) thick shim stock or feeler gauge to confirm that bearing cones (14) are seated on the gear. 13. Install the upper gear and bearing assembly in transfer gear housing. Current models do not have a gasket under cover (19). On housings that do not have a gasket, apply 6V6640 Gasket Maker to the surface, making sure it is spread evenly and continuously. Make sure there are no nicks or scratches on either surface to be sealed.14. Install threaded dowels (18) into the transfer gear housing. Install a new gasket on the transfer gear housing. Fasten a hoist to the cover (19) and put it in position on the transfer gear housing. Install the bolts that hold it. 15. Lower the temperature of bearing cup (20) and install it in cage (21). Use asbestos gloves to handle the bearing cup. Do not install O-ring seal (22) at this time. Use a 0.038 mm (0.0015 in) thick shim stock or feeler gauge to confirm that bearing cup (20) is seated in the housing. 16. Install idler cage assembly (21) without shims on the transfer gear housing.17. Perform the following to find the proper shim pack for idler cage assembly (21):a. Install two of the four bolts (24), at 180° apart, and tighten them evenly to 8.5 N m (75 lb in). Turn the gear three revolutions.b. Tighten bolts (24), again, to a torque of 17 N m (150 lb in). Turn the gear, again, three revolutions.c. Tighten bolts (24) to a torque of 17 N m (150 lb in). There should be an even drag on the bearings.d. Measure the gap between the cage and housing with a tapered feeler gauge at two places radially outward from bolts (24) on the outside diameter of the idler cage assembly. Divide the two measurements by 2 to get an average measurement.18. Remove idler cage assembly (21). The desired end play for the idler gear is 0.08 0.03 mm (0.003 0.001 in). There should be no need to measure
