Schematic for the CAT Data LinkThis diagnostic code is associated with the CAT Data Link. This diagnostic code is recorded when the Power Train/Chassis Electronic Control Module (Power Train/Chassis ECM) cannot communicate with the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM via the CAT Data Link. The update rate from the Power Train/Chassis ECM is not correct.The CAT Data Link is an input and an output of all electronic control modules. The CAT Data Link is designed to enable communications for all electronic control modules and service tools. The CAT Data Link is not a visible component. The CAT Data Link consists of internal control circuits and the connecting harness wiring.This FMI 09 means that the ECM has not received expected information from the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The wires for the CAT Data Link to the Power Train/Chassis ECM and the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM are open or the wires are shorted.
The wrong software is installed on the Power Train/Chassis ECM.Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected. Ensure that the diagnostic code of CID 0562 FMI 09 is active before performing this procedure.System Response:The harness code from the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM is not available. If the Power Train/Chassis ECM had never been able to communicate with the Caterpillar Monitoring System ECM, the Power Train/Chassis ECM would not have allowed the machine to start. The Power Train/Chassis ECM would not have allowed the machine to shift. Also, the Power Train/Chassis ECM would not have allowed the machine to disengage the parking brake.Test Step 1. CHECK THE COMPATIBILITY OF THE SOFTWARE.
Verify that the software is compatible.Expected Result:The software is compatible.Results:
YES - The software is compatible. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - The software is not compatible.Repair: Install the correct software. Ensure that the correct part number was used if any electronic control modules have been replaced. Stop.Test Step 2. CHECK THE +BATTERY CIRCUIT.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect connector J1 from the Power Train/Chassis ECM.
Turn the battery disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
At connector J1, measure the voltage from contact J1-1 to contact J1-13 and contact J1-23.Expected Result:The voltage should measure 18 to 35 DCV.Results:
YES - The voltage is correct. The Power Train/Chassis ECM is receiving the voltage. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The voltage does not measure 18 to 35 DCV.Repair: The ECM is not receiving the correct voltage. Ensure that proper ground is available. If the ground is correct, repair the power circuit. Also, check the circuit breakers. The circuit for connector contact J1-1 to the ECM has failed. Repair the failed circuit. Stop.Test Step 3. CHECK THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.
Turn the key start switch and the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
