Adaptability
The new 4 and 5 tooth segments can be used on current 953C machines in the field, but cannot be mixed with the old 3-tooth design. The new segments were on factory built machines July 2002, with the following effective serial number 2ZN05351.
Servicing/Assembly Instructions
Proper installation of sprocket segments is critical in preventing segment loosening and subsequent loss/damage to other parts. Install segments per the following guidelines:
1.
Lubricate the bolt threads with 5P3931 Anti-Seize Compound.
2.
Bolt heads against the segments, nuts against the final drive hub.
3.
Tighten all bolts to 100 +/- 20Nm (75+/- 15lb ft).
4.
Then tighten additional 1/3 turn. This properly stretches the bolt for good retention.
Identification Of Tough Steel Segments
The new 4 and 5 tooth segments made from tough steel material can be visually identified by the small indented ?scallops? beneath the sprocket teeth, see example below.
Custom Track Service
Oval sprocket segments are not tape measured across the teeth to determine wear. The segment geometry and sprocket guarding does not allow for this measurement. Segment wear for oval sprocket tractors and loaders is determined by using the sprocket reuse indicator gauge. For the 953/D5 segments, the plastic gauges part no. 5P8616 (included in 6V9413 CTS tool kit). The use of the gauge to determine show when a worn sprocket can continue to be used or should be replaced is shown below.
Figure 1:Segment OK to use Figure 2: Segment should be replaced
Notice in Figure 1, the gauge indicates the sprocket can be reused, even though the tips of the teeth are cosmetically worn. The gauge is designed to show this, and thus avoid premature changing of the sprocket segments. Page 66 of the CTS handbook (14th edition) describes sprocket wear management in greater detail.
