Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" or refer to Special Publication, PECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over any disconnected fuel system components.

Stop the engine.
Turn off the start switch or disconnect the battery (starting motor) when maintenance is performed on fuel filters.
Shut off the fuel tank supply valve to the engine.
Place a suitable container under the fuel filter.
Loosen the fuel filter drain plug. Allow the fuel to drain into a suitable container.
Tighten the fuel filter drain plug to 1.5 0.5 N m (13.2 4.4 lb in).
Unscrew the fuel filter housing (1) .
Remove the fuel filter element.
Lubricate the new fuel filter o-ring with fuel. Install the new fuel filter.Note: Do not fill the filter assembly with fuel before installing. Contaminated fuel can damage the fuel system.
Tighten the fuel filter assembly to a torque of 30 N m (22 lb ft).
