Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods.
Remove the exhaust manifold.
Remove accumulator (fuel injection)
Remove the electronic unit injector.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Inspect all O-rings, seals, and gaskets for wear and damage. Replace if necessary.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or for disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

Remove two bolts (1) and cover (2).

Remove six bolts (3) from cylinder head (4).
Illustration 3 g06331790Note: Do not use spacers of any kind. Tooling (A) should sit flat on the cylinder head surface.
Attach Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to cylinder head (4). Cylinder head (4) weighs approximately 72 kg (160 lb).
Remove cylinder head (4) and position onto suitable cribbing to prevent damage.Note: Exercise care in removing cylinder head (4) and gasket (5) to avoid contamination of the oil supply holes in the cylinder block.

Remove dowel assembly (6) and seal (5).
Remove fire ring (7).
Two positioning dowels (8) must remain in the cylinder block. Insure that positioning dowels (8) are in place before installing cylinder head (4).
