Information:

Inspect the differential carrier closely. Make sure that the thrust washers are in place and that differential gears and bevel gears are free and not bound.
60. Heat bearing cone (21) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F). Install bearing cone (21) on the differential carrier. Make sure the bearing cone is seated against the shoulder of the differential carrier. 61. Turn the differential over. Heat bearing cone (20) to a maximum temperature of 135° C (275° F). Install bearing cone (20) on the differential carrier. Make sure the bearing cone is seated against the shoulder of the differential carrier. 62. Install both bearing races (18) on differential assembly (19). Place the differential assembly into the differential housing and allow the ring gear and pinion shaft assembly to mesh. Note the alignment marks placed on the ring gear and the differential housing. This will indicate the proper direction of placement of the differential assembly. 63. Install the two adjusting nuts (16). Tighten one and loosen the other until contact is made between the ring gear and the pinion shaft assembly. Check the differential assembly to insure that the bearings on both sides are completely seated in the bearing races and no side play exists. Check the backlash by slowly turning the ring gear and pinion shaft. Make sure that they do not bind and that a small amount of backlash exists. 64. Apply a small amount of 9S-3263 Thread Lock on locating pins (43). Install a locating pin in each bearing cap (15). 65. Check the identification marks, and install two bearing caps (15) as shown. Install four bolts (17) that hold the bearing caps in position. Tighten bolts (17) to a torque of 195 N m (145 lb ft).66. Set the differential backlash as follows:a. The correct backlash will be engraved on the ring gear just behind the gear teeth. Record this dimension. b. Install Tool (K) as shown. Turn the differential all the way in one direction, and zero the indicator gauge. Make sure that the tip of the indicator gauge is making good contact with a gear tooth on the ring gear.c. Adjust adjusting nut (16) on the ring gear side of the differential until the required backlash is obtained.d. Screw in adjusting nut (16) on the opposite side until the differential bearing is free of end play.e. Tighten adjusting nut (16) two more notches to obtain the required differential preload.f. Check the backlash again. If necessary, correct the backlash adjustment.g. Rotate the ring gear, differential, and pinion gear several turns. Make sure that it rotates easy and does not bind at any point. h. Use a large micrometer as illustrated to check the installation dimension. The installation dimension should be 216 0.05 mm (8.500 .002 in).
Tooling (N). (1) 1U-5230 Hand Pump. (2) 1P-2375 Coupler Assembly. (3) 1P-2376 Coupler Assembly. (4) 8T-0859 Pressure Gage. (5) 6V-4144 Coupler Assembly. (6) 6V-3966 Nipple Assembly. (7) 8F-0024 Hose Assembly. (8) 006-0210 Tee. (9) 030-8370 Reducer
