Features Of The Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System
* Mechanical, hammerless installationThe Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System includes a through-hardened DH-2 wear plate which slides onto a permanent weld-on base plate. The base plate is made of slightly softer but tough weldable steel to withstand high load forces. The wear plate is held in place with a new patented compression retainer. The compression retainer is investment cast from spring steel material and acts only as a spacer when located in the holding position.
Worn wear plates can be quickly replaced using a common pry bar, without hammering or welding. The base plate is not subject to wear under normal conditions because it is entirely covered by the wear plate.
* Reduced downtime and maintenanceBecause the wear plates can be changed quickly, usually in two minutes or less, downtime and maintenance time are reduced compared to weld-on or bolt-on wear plates.
* Long wear lifeThe new patented compression retainer is positioned low in the base plate allowing a large percentage of the wear plate to be worn away before replacement. This efficient use of total material lengthens replacement intervals and allows for less additional bucket weight.
* Flexible applicationThe weld-on base plate can be welded on virtually any flat or moderately curved surface that requires wear protection. The minimum radius of a curved surface is shown in Chart 1. The system is designed to take loads from any direction, so the orientation of the wear plate is not dependent on the direction of the load. The Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System only requires 50 mm (2.0 in) of space from adjacent objects to facilitate replacement.
* Wear indicatorThe wear plate has blind holes cast into each corner to serve as a wear indicator. When the holes become exposed in one or more corners, the wear plate must be replaced. If the wear plate is allowed to wear beyond the wear indicator, damage to the base plate may occur.

A CD ROM titled "Caterpillar Mechanically Attached Wear Plate System", PEXT7000, is available through the normal distribution system. The CD ROM can be used by dealer machine and parts sales people for training or customer sales presentations. The CD ROM is interactive, and includes an Introduction, Features and Benefits, Size Comparison, How To Remove and Install, and Questions and Answers. The CD ROM plays for approximately twenty minutes and is complete with video, narration, and virtual reality features. Remove and install instructions can be printed and used as a field reference.
A scale model demonstration kit, PEKP8025, is also available through the normal distribution system. The kit contains a full scale 20 series wear plate, base plate, and compression retainer and is enclosed in a carrying case. The demonstration kit can be used in conjunction with the CD ROM when making customer presentations.
A datasheet, PEHP7075, is available through the normal distribution system to serve as a product introduction for customers.
