The engine oil travels through the supply line from the engine to the oil inlet port (1) on the shaft and bracket assembly of the fan clutch. The oil flows through the inlet port (1) and into the shaft. Oil passages in the shaft distribute the lubricating oil to the bearings, to internal components, and into the splined hub cavity. Centrifugal force drives oil through the holes in the clutch hub in order to cool the clutch plates. The grooved configuration of the clutch plate assembly allows oil to pass over the clutch plates at all times. The flow of oil over the clutch plates permits the clutch slippage and a variable fan speed.Centrifugal force carries the oil forward to the internal diameter of the pulley. The oil is pulled in the direction of pulley's rotation. The pitot tubes face into the direction of the pulley's rotation. The rotational movement of the oil forces the oil into the pitot tubes. The pitot tubes direct the oil through a passage and through the fan shaft and bracket to an external oil outlet port (3). A line from the oil outlet port (3) carries the engine oil to a nonpressurized port on the engine. From the port, the engine oil is returned to the engine sump.
The pitot tubes remove oil from the clutch, maintaining low internal oil pressure in the fan clutch. Do not run the engine without belts driving the fan clutch pulley.
