Description of Change: A new lip type seal is used in the accessory drive group on in-line engines and in the alternator mounting group on vee engines. This lip type seal is located in a housing assembly that is fastened to the flywheel housing. This new lip type seal will help prevent oil leaks from the area around the alternator drive pulley.Adaptable To: The new 189-5178 Lip Type Seal is a direct replacement for the 9X-7719 Lip Type Seal in the 7C-7346 Accessory Drive Group on in-line engines and in the 7C-7347 Alternator Mounting Group on vee engines. The new lip type seal is effective with the engines that are listed above. The new lip type seal is adaptable to all earlier engines that are equipped with the 7C-7346 Accessory Drive Group or the 7C-7347 Alternator Mounting Group .Before installing a new 189-5178 Lip Type Seal, be sure that the bore in the housing for the seal is clean and free of foreign material. Put a thin coating of 4C-4032 Bearing Mount Compound in the bore in the housing for the seal. Install the new lip type seal in the bore in the housing for the seal. Be sure that the spring-loaded lip of the new seal is pointing toward the engine. Be careful not to damage the new seal when you install the alternator drive pulley.
