Turn the battery disconnect switch to the ON position.
Make sure that the reset buttons for the circuit breakers remain depressed. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Circuit Breakers - Reset".

Move the hydraulic control lockout lever to the LOCKED position.This machine is equipped with an engine neutral start system. The system only allows the engine to start when the hydraulic control lockout lever is in the LOCKED position.
Move the joysticks to the HOLD position.

Turn engine start switch (1) to the ON position.
The monitoring system starts.Note: For more information on the monitoring system, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Monitoring System".
Check the fluid levels.If a fluid level is too low, add the corresponding fluid to the specified level. Add the fluid before you start the engine.
Turn engine speed dial (2) to the speed LOW IDLE position.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. If the engine does not start, allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. The engine start switch must be turned to the OFF position before trying to restart.
Turn engine start switch (1) to the ON position.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts.For temperatures above 0 °C (32 °F), the engine is designed to start without the use of a starting aid. For temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F), starting aids are available.Note: A premeasured amount of ether is automatically injected into the air inlet when temperatures are below 0 °C (32 °F) and the engine speed is below 500 RPM. This allows the operator to start the engine easily. If ether needs to be injected manually, perform Step 11 through Step 13.

Inject starting aid (ether), only while cranking the engine.Excessive ether can cause piston and ring damage. Use starting aid (ether) for cold starting purposes only.
Push the right side of the ether starting aid switch. Release the ether starting aid switch.
Operate the ether starting aid switch at intervals of two seconds while you crank the engine. Continue this procedure until the engine starts and the engine is running well.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts.To start the engine in temperatures below -18°C (0°F), the use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. One of the following may be required:
Coolant heater
Fuel heater
Extra battery capacity
Oil heaterTo start the engine in temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer. Also see Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU5898, "Cold Weather Recommendations", which is available from your Caterpillar dealer.
