Schematic of the auto ripper control switch
The CID 3601 diagnostic code is associated with the auto ripper control switch. The switch has three inputs to the Implement ECM: "N/O" (wire H891-BR(Brown)), "N/C" (wire H892-OR(Orange)) and "return" (wire Y773-GY(Grey)).During normal operation, one of the switch inputs is open and the other input is grounded. If both inputs are in the same state, the Implement ECM will detect a diagnostic code. The FMI 04 diagnostic code is recorded when the Implement ECM detects the voltage for the switch circuit is below normal. Both switch inputs are grounded. The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed below:
A short to ground
The switch has failed.
The ECM has failed. This condition is unlikely.Note: Ensure that the diagnostic code is active. The following procedure can cause new diagnostic codes to be recorded. Ignore these created diagnostic codes. When the procedure is completed, clear the created diagnostic codes.System Response:A level 2 warning will be generated and the "Auto Ripper Control" function will be disabled.Test Step 1. CHECK FOR A SHORT TO GROUND.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the J1 and J2 machine harness connectors from the Implement ECM.
At the J2 machine harness connector, measure the resistance from contact J2-38 and contact J2-39 to all sources of ground. Expected Result:The resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement. Results:
OK - The resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms for each measurement. Proceed to test step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance measurement is not 5000 ohms for one or more of the measurements. There is a short is in the circuit with the low resistance measurement.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness. Verify that the problem has been corrected.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE RESISTANCE OF THE SWITCH.
The key start switch and the disconnect switch remain in the OFF position.
The J1 and J2 connectors remain disconnected from the Implement ECM.
Disconnect the machine harness from the switch.
Place the switch in the normally open position. Measure the resistance of the switch from contact 2 (wire H891-BR(Brown)) to contact 3 (wire Y773-GY(Grey)) of connector for the switch. The switch is pressed.
Place the switch in the normally closed position. Measure the resistance of the switch from contact 1 (wire H892-OR(Orange)) to contact 3 (wire Y773-GY(Grey)) of connector for the switch. The switch is not pressed. Expected Result:The resistance measurement is less than 5 ohms for each measurement. Results:
OK - The resistance measures less than 5 ohms for each measurement. The switch is correct. The Implement ECM may have failed.Repair: Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, the Implement ECM may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the ECM requires replacement, refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
NOT OK - The resistance is not less than 5 ohms for one or both measurements. The switch has failed.Repair:
